Extracurricular Activities at COM

Read below about communication focused clubs and organizations within the college from participating graduate students. This is by no means an exhaustive list of extracurricular activities. Boston University’s Student Activities Office offers over 500 student organizations, too.

WTBU Radio - The Beat of Boston University: BU’s student-run, volunteer radio station which broadcasts live 20 hours a day. Our station is primarily available through our webcast, but you can also listen on 89.3 FM/640 AM if you’re in Boston, or on BU’s cable channel 6.

BUTV10: BU's student produced and managed content distribution network. For over 25 years, COM students have worked together to create and deliver a wide array of entertaining and informative programming.

BU News Service (BUNS): offers students in the journalism department opportunities to gain practical experience reporting and editing news. In some cases, your work may be shared with media partners who will publish it for a larger audience. We operate under a Creative Commons license that allows for republication of stories with proper credit.

Why COM?

We understand that researching graduate programs can lead to information overload. Each institution highlights its unique offerings, but what truly sets one apart from another?

This page outlines several ways that our College of Communication (COM) distinguishes itself and why we hope you’ll consider joining our community! We prioritize every individual student. While the Graduate Affairs team and your professors will provide consistent guidance for excelling inside and outside the classroom, we believe that the key to student success at COM lies in our remarkable students.

If you’re accepted here, rest assured that we have complete confidence in your creativity, drive, and abilities.

We have the resources to help you succeed:

  • Professors: They're experts in their fields, regularly publishing new, exciting research. And we are lucky enough that their home base is COM-- they are wholeheartedly invested in the success of their students, during and post-COM.

  • Research: Boston University is a research institution, and COM is no exception-- we have our very own Communication Research Center. This doesn't just go for our professors-- many of our students are research oriented as well, choosing majors such as Marketing Communication Research and our PhD program in Emerging Media Studies.

  • Our Field Production Services department fully equips our multiple news and television studios, state of the art radio stations and podcast recording booths with any sound and visual tools our students need to create professional-level productions.

Why Boston?

Check out the College of Communication's Boston City Guide here.

Boston: There’s no place like it. It’s America’s most dominant professional sports city (with plenty of talented college teams as well—see: The Beanpot). Boston's got breweries galore, the Prudential Center, Boston Calling Music Festival, Duck Tours and so much more. It is truly a unique place, and COM is lucky enough to be right in the middle of it. Being in the heart of Boston, a vibrant international city and the 9th largest media market in the country, grants COM graduate students access to some of the world’s foremost advertising, media, marketing, and communications firms. Internships and career opportunities abound. And, as a major high-tech center, the city remains at the forefront of communication innovation.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

COM Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee: exists to elevate and ensure a culture of inclusion in which all members of our community are valued and respected. We strive to create an inclusive and equitable environment that recruits, supports, and retains a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. We celebrate the diversity of identity, culture, perspective and expression in our community.

International Student Community

For our international applicants, the best way to learn more about studying at BU is from other international students who have been through the same process of transitioning to academic and social life in the United States. You can see a collection of videos on BU graduate student website, in which students from all over the world talk about their experiences and offer advice:
